Smelly plastic containers

Always rinse plastic containers with cold water before washing as hot water helps containers absorb smells. After drying, leave lids off and air well before storing.

Doona's

When placing doona's in a clothes dryer, add three new tennis balls. The tennis balls make the feathers spread around leaving the quilt soft and fluffy.

Moth and silverfish

To repel moths and silverfish away from clothes, place your empty perfume bottles without lids in drawers. An added bonus is perfumed undies etc.

Fabric Colours

To help prevent colours running, dissolve 1 packet of Epson salts in cold water and rinse new coloured garments then wash. Use all your rinsing water from your washing machine to water the garden in hot dry weather. This saves water and keeps your garden looking great.

Tea break for painting brushes

If you take a short break it is not necessary to wash your brushes; wrap them up securely in foil or plastic or suspend them in water and they will stay soft.

Light fittings and painting

To protect light fittings when painting enclose in recycled plastic bags, sealing with elastic bands.

To clean stainless steel

DO NOT use abrasive scouring pads, Steel Wool, undissolved detergent powder or leave vinegar or salt in contact with stainless steel for long.

To polish stainless steel

To polish stainless steel rub with a sprinkling of flour using dry cloth.

To remove lingering odours in ovens

Heat orange peels in clean oven to remove any lingering smells.

To prevent silver from tarnishing

For silver which is to be displayed but not used, rub with a little petroleum jelly after cleaning. It will prevent tarnishing.

To clean marble

Dip a cloth in turpentine and rub over marble to clean and brighten it.

Food odours

Most food odours can be dealt with using natural means. Avoid unnecessary and polluting air fresheners.

* Cooked cabbage or onion smells - add a slice of lemon or a desert spoon of sugar to water while cooking
* Rub chopping board and hands with lemon to remove onion smells.
* Brussels Sprouts can be cooked in equal parts water and milk.
Also improves flavour.
